Five must-visit cafes for autumn in Berlin

Five must-visit cafes for autumn in Berlin

For many, autumn in Berlin is a difficult time. With the recent memories of sunny days along canals and laying about in Tempelhofer Feld fresh in our minds, it can be hard to embrace the colder change in weather.

For us, autumn and winter are a great opportunity to do what we love most – to explore and enjoy cafes across Berlin. After all, what’s better than snuggling up in cosy corners to enjoy delicious coffee and brunch?

We’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite autumn spots in Berlin, so that you have plenty of places to visit and sip on a delicious coffee while watching the leaves outside as they change colour.

Brunch at Sorrel Berlin

SORREL

First opened in September 2020, Neukölln’s Sorrel got off to a rocky start. The COVID-19 pandemic forced a temporary closure over winter, after which they came back with guns (and brunches) blazing.

Sorrel doubles as both a cafe and restaurant, offering brunch 7 days a week and dinner on Thursday and Friday evenings. Located on the corner of Pflügerstraße and Pannierstraße, the light-filled eatery is bright, welcoming and inspiring, with art ordaining its white brick and polished concrete interior.

The menus are constantly being changed to align with the freshest and most seasonal produce. Expect everything from Turkish-inspired eggs (Çilbir), to fancy French Toast and their famous Schnitzel. To top it all off, they serve a range of fresh, locally roasted coffee and a natural wine list that keeps you coming back again and again.

Brunch at Silo Coffee Berlin

SILO COFFEE

Berlin’s neighbourhood of Friedrichshain is renowned for its art scene, famous clubs and weekly markets, making it a go-to destination for visitors and one of the most desirable places to live in the city. However, it’s also the home of one of our favourite Berlin cafes, Silo Coffee.

Established in 2013 by Australian-born Morgan Love, Silo Coffee is a slice of Australian brunch culture seated squarely in the centre of F’Shain. Opened with the goal of offering great brunch in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the Silo team do just that – its warm, wooden interior and large, open bar offer visitors an opportunity to gather around communal tables with friends, or to tuck away in a corner to have a quiet moment over a delicious brunch.

The all-day breakfast and brunch menu is crafted using regional and seasonal produce, with a mix of dishes to suit a variety of tastes. Whether you’re looking for a classic ‘avo on toast’ or seeking something sweeter like a French Toast, Silo’s got it all.

WILKE

Since opening in the heart of Neukölln in 2018, Carolin Wilke’s namesake cafe, WILKE has taken pride in its identity as a neighbourhood cafe – a place where members of the community meet, gather and treat themselves to something special.

Serving a range of impeccable and Instagram-able dishes, ranging from healthy bowls to flavour-filled Shakshuka, WILKE attaches great importance to organic, regional and housemade produce. They make all their cakes in-house, and source most of their other products from local partners and suppliers.

Although we’re a sucker for a classic dish like eggs on toast (with all the sides, of course), we can’t pass up one of their famous toasted sandwiches with homemade pickles, accompanied with a flat white with the Milky Way blend. Best enjoyed with our favourite activity: taking a seat on the window bench, and watching the world pass you by.

Location: Boddinstraße 10-11, 12053

Brunch recommendation: Shakshuka with roasted aubergine, tomato, chilli, parsley, coriander, feta, poached egg and sliced Albatross sourdough bread

ALBATROSS

Bread connoisseurs, we’ve got the perfect destination for you. Say hello to our friends at Albatross – a multinational, adventurous bakery that uses techniques from a range of culinary traditions to both nail (and elevate) the classics and create delicious, new delights.

Founded in 2016 by Luke Smetham, the team expanded to include Jasmin Lünstroth, Anders Alkaersig and Geoff Stewart. Together, the team showcases their international expertise and backgrounds in hospitality to deliver baked goods and confections that are community-focused, and focused on regionality and innovation.

A self-professed ‘humble bakery’, the quality of their goods is anything but. From seasonally-inspired loaves to pistachio and ricotta croissants, we can’t get enough of this inspiring bakery. You can enjoy it all at their headquarters with a freshly brewed coffee – or if you can’t make it by, you can even have their bread delivered via the Archipel distribution and delivery service.

Father Carpenter cafe in Mitte, Berlin.

FATHER CARPENTER

Often at the top of the list of must-visit brunch spots in Berlin, Father Carpenter has been inspiring locals and tourists alike since January 2015. Co-founded by Australian-born Kresten Thogersen, its location in a beautiful and hidden hinterhof (courtyard) in Mitte is a stone’s throw away from some of Berlin’s best sights and shopping.

Father Carpenter’s mission is to elevate hospitality and gastronomy in Berlin ‘by providing a positive, authentic and memorable experience to all guests’ – and we think they’ve nailed it. Their two-section cafe provides visitors with ample opportunity to dine in and enjoy a cozy and modern interior, or to grab something from their extensive menu to takeaway while you wander around some of the oldest streets in Berlin.

Our autumn go-to is their Baked Overnight Black Beans, served with Chipotle, Crème Fraiche, and Spring Onion - with an option for either Roasted Sweet Potato & Feta or Braised Pork Shoulder to complete it. A hearty dish like this, with a batch brew or hand brewed filter on the side … sounds like a perfect autumn day, right?

Location: Münzstraße 21, 10178
Social media: @father.carpenter

Brunch recommendation: Baked Overnight Beans or Roasted Portobello Mushrooms
Coffee: Father Carpenter & Field Coffee
